Reading the website
The website does not use advertising trackers, behavioural analytics or third-party embedded media. Images, styles and scripts are served as site files. Ordinary requests to a web host may involve technical information such as an IP address, requested file, browser information and request time. Such information may be processed to deliver pages, diagnose faults and protect the service.
Where technical security information is processed, the purpose is reliable and secure operation and the lawful basis is legitimate interests. It should be kept only as long as needed for those purposes, subject to any legal obligation or active security investigation.
The local contact tool
Entering a name, reply address and message into the contact tool does not transmit those entries to us. JavaScript creates the preview in the current page. The tool does not save the draft in browser storage. Copying places text on your clipboard at your request; downloading creates a plain-text file on your device.
Your clipboard, downloaded file and any email application you use are under your control and may be governed by other services’ privacy settings. Avoid using a shared device for sensitive correspondence.
If you email us
We receive your email address, message and any information you choose to include. We use these to respond, assess corrections and maintain relevant editorial records. The usual lawful basis is our legitimate interest in handling correspondence and improving the publication. Legal obligations may provide a separate basis where applicable.
Access is limited to people and service providers who need it for correspondence, hosting, security or legal administration. We do not sell personal information. Correspondence is retained while needed to handle the matter and maintain an appropriate record; information no longer needed should be deleted or anonymised. If a correction needs a lasting editorial record, unnecessary personal details should be removed.
Browser preferences
The Cookies page explains the localStorage entry used when you save a preference. It stays in your browser and is not a message to our editors. No optional tracking is enabled by either current preference choice.
Your rights
Subject to applicable law, you may request access, correction, deletion, restriction or portability of personal information and object to processing based on legitimate interests. Where processing relies on consent, you may withdraw it without affecting earlier lawful processing. We may need proportionate information to verify a request.
Contact us using the email above. You may also complain to the Irish Data Protection Commission or another competent supervisory authority. Information about the Irish authority is available at dataprotection.ie.
Changes and external services
External links lead to services with their own privacy notices. If the website’s data practices change, this notice should be updated to describe the new processing before it begins. This notice describes the journal and its local tools, not the practices of an independently operated website you choose to visit.
